Brief idea

This is just a brief idea i have thought up just this moment. My main idea at this moment in time is to go for a groundhog day feel/repetition.

Video starts on a eye. (idea from the TV show LOST)

I would then go onto the character being on the bed whilst his eye opens to then getting up, similar to this clip..

I would have it repeating in a similar way. For example, i would like to go with this idea..

- Wake up, eye shot
- Character gets up of bed, walks towards door
- Character stumbles down the stairs (risk - falling)
- Character staggers towards cupboard, opens cupboard
- (EITHER) Character pulls out a beer, vodka, whiskey (alcohol. Point of view shot)) OR see's that it is empty and gets wallet out and check if got money for some alcohol.
- Character drinks alcohol if has some.
- Character Staggers to front door, after picking up car keys (close up/ Point of view shot)
- Character gets in car then puts head on steering wheel acting drunk/hungover. (as he puts head on steering wheel, get a groundhog/flashback of him waking up again, and doing the same actions again until up to this point, however this time gets further)
- (EITHER) Character drinks alcohol has with him and drives (fake. Risk - looking like drink driving) OR Drives to a small store to buy alcohol, where he gets the alcohol and puts money on counter and walks off. (Point of View Shot) (issue with the second idea is that the shop manager may not allow it and also if character looks/acts drunk the shop keeper may not sell to him.)
- Gets in car with alcohol after store, OR whilst driving looks at alcohol and then again. (get a groundhog/flashback of him waking up again, and doing the same actions again until up to this point, however this time gets further)

Each time he wakes up thinking "ive already done this" he looks more confused on his facial expression.

- Eventually arrives at a park and sits on the swing and swings (point of view shot, established shot, close up etc.)(get a groundhog/flashback of him waking up again, and doing the same actions again until up to this point, however this time gets further)
- Character then staggers into a field, lip syncing, still with a bottle of alcohol in hand. (established shot, point of view shot)
- Character Then falls or lays down in the middle of field lip syncing and drinking, looking into the sky. (point of view shot)

End

So i wanted to go for a repetitive kind of music video, however each time it repeated the character got further and further down the story.

Kid Cudi - Pursuit of Happiness

This is the song i will be using in my music video.

Sign Story/Lyrics idea.

In my final piece i would like to use the 'Sign idea' to interpret the lyrics of the song to match with action. I believe it would be effetive and would also mean less lip syncing for anyone who is not comfortable or confident with lip syncing.
I feel pretty strong about using signs to tell part of the story within the music video, i believe its a good way to illustrate lyrics, however in my music video i would like to try have the signs moving whilst changing, for example, from the top of my head i can think of a character on a swing holding up words and everytime they swing back and fourth the word changes telling the story, just an idea, to make it affective it would take time in editing, however i think its a good element.

Moodboard/inspiration

In my moodboard research i went for urban/cartoon text, reason being i am leaning towards doing a recreation of a kid cudi music video, and his style is very cartoonistic and urbany.

Inspirational..

Analyse - Lil Wayne "Knockout ft. Nicki Minaj"

Background: Lil Wayne is a 27 year old Rapper. The song 'Knockout' from his most recent album 'Rebirth' only reached to 44th in the US charts.

The music video has a lot of special affects within the 4 minute 10 seconds, mostly being CGI (Computer Generated Images) with the use of Green Screen. Whereas most CGI music videos can come out looking cheap and bad, this one seems to pay off.

I TubeChopped these 11 seconds because of the cut scenes being in sync with the beat, which i find very affective and something i would like to use when i come to producing my music video. With it being a blank canvas background it allows the characters to glow and be the only mise en scene in that scene. Within the 11 seconds their is good use of amplify of Lil Wayne wearing two different outfits in double occasions, this is very affective and can symbolise two sides to the character.

In this scene there is a lot of cotinuity cut scenes which makes the music video have more of a pace, this is very affective when the action in the scene doesnt illustrate enough pace, i would like to use this in my video to make some scenes in my video seem more of a fast pace. In this TubeChopped scene their is a good example of CGI being used with the locker room. I would not be able to get hold of a Green Screen for my music video and even if i did i would not know how to use it, this is something i would like to learn at some point whether it be at college or university.

I TubeChopped this part of the music video to show the props of Nicki Minaj and Lil Wayne and how the scenes amplify from one beat wearing a white top and jeans to the next beat wearign a cardigan, also with Nicki Minaj's hair being two colours, both peoples looks could symbolise to sides to them.
In this scene we also get another glimpse of CGI inside the ring, we also see camera flashes from where the crowd are meant to be, i can only imagine that would be very challenging to do if not impossible to do at this level.
The flashes of white around the character can symbolise power as the character glows and the glow beats along with the beat.
When the camera gets an establishing shot of the ring and zooms in on Lil Wayne, i believe it is a good idea to get an established shot within any digital media production so the audience get a vibe and knowledge of the setting. I would like to use a number of establised shots in my production.

Overall i feel this music video is very simple yet very hard and confussing to put together due to the CGI and Green Screen, hard to produce yet when watched looks simple. However with CGI Green Screen being used they would have filmed the whole production within one room (Stage/airport hanger) because of the space.

Analyse - Kid Cudi "Pursuit of Happiness ft. MGMT"

Background: Kid Cudi is a 26 year old hip-hop artist. The song Pursuit of Happiness was on the album "Man on the Moon: The End of Day" and reached #3 in the UK R&B Chart.

The Music Video has been edited to be in slow motion for everyone other than the actual Artist, this shows the viewer who the artist/lead role is in the music video, i feel this has a positive affect on the music video as the lyrics of the video are about being drunk and on drugs etc. So the slow motion illustrates being drunk and on drugs.

The first part i decided to TubeChop is the beginning of the song, and i am picking up on the slow motion again here. At the beginning of the music video everything is in normal motion speed until the artist starts to sing/rap, this is when everything surrounding the artist slows down whereas Kid Cudi is in normal motion, this can represent that Kid Cudi is "Godly" as only god should be able to speed and slow time, it represents the power kid cudi has in the music video.
The mise en scene in this clip is doom and gloom with the lighting and room colours, although in saying that the surrounding people in the scene are celebrating drinking glasses of wine and champaigne and doing the old "cheers" with the glasses. This could come under as being a disjuncture as you expect with the setting being all dark and dusk and then people being all happy and celebrating.

I Decided to use this clip to talk about how the lyrics represent the celebrations going on in this scene, "im in the pursuit of happiness.." and the surrounding people looking happy. Having confetti fall from the ceiling could connote and represent a new years eve party.
As the surrounding cast seem to people happy and enjoying themselves, Kid Cudi's lyrics "im in the pursuit of happiness" connotes he is not currently happy however he is in search of happiness, this is why, in the scene he is the only person who is looking miserable, until the lyrics "everything that shine ain't always gonna be gold" can connote to be happy for now as things could be much worse, which then cuts to him and 'Drake' dancing looking happy.

In this clip we get a close up of Kid Cudi's face and his eyes, by the looks of his eye's the rapper is made to look high on drugs and sad, this fit's in with the lyrics as they go "Tell me what you know about dreamin’ dreamin’, You don't really know about nothin’ nothin’. Tell me what you know about them night terrors every night. 5 am, cold sweats wakin’ up to the skies. Tell me what you know about dreams, dreams. Tell me what you know about night terrors, nothin’" these lyrics fit in well with the action because the lyrics are saying that nobody know's the pain/challenges he is going through, which leads to why he looks sad on the close up of his face.

In this scene the speed of the clip speeds back up at random intervals, this can symbolise how thigns are picking up for the lead character and how life is becoming more normal and not depressive. The lyrics "I'll be fine once I get it, I'll be good." can connote that once the artist has reached fortune, fame and happiness he will behave.

In this last scene, time slow's down again and speed's up at random interval's. At the start of the scene Kid Cudi is shown to throw a bottle at the floor, and then walks towards the camera, the mise en scene and action can connote that he is a 'bum' and is not happy or successful at this point because of his rigid clothing and actions. As the lead character strolled into the toilets looking 'high' or drunk (or both), Kid Cudi then goes on to see himself dressed smartly in a tuxedo, however also drunk or 'high' (or both), we can see this as he falls when he try's to pick himself up off of the floor. As the 'bum' kid cudi is watcing the 'successful' kid cudi get up off of the floor we the viewers can see in the 'bum' kid cudi's face the dissapointment in what the 'successful' kid cudi had became, to add to the dissapointment look, he looks to the floor as if he is ashamed.

The whole point of this music video could be to show the viewer how he struggles to become what he wants, which is fortune and fame and happy, however we see that when he gets fortune and fame, he is not happy, so at the end when he looks to the floor feeling ashamed could represent a cliffhanger because he never reached happiness.

If i could take any ideas from this video it would be the slow motion surroundings with the main character moving, i think that is a very affective way of showing whos the lead character in the scene and can add to the mood of the scene.

Busted - What i go to school for

The class and I, was given a task of remaking the first 1 minute and 14 seconds of Busted's 'What i go to school for', and we only had 8 lessons to complete it, that includes pre-production, production and post-production.

Pre-Production
Firstly, i watched the first minute and fourteen seconds of the video 4 or 5 times and made notes on the props, lighting, location etc. it gave me a good insight into what was needed in the remake. I then went onto make a storyboard, this would help me when it came to production. The storyboard included a drawn image and the lyrics which would help when lip syncing. Looking back at the storyboard i have notice already where i can improve that would help me even more, such as adding the time of the clip, how long the clip is on for, props etc. with more notes it would improve the depth of detail when it came to filming.

Lip Syncing
As a small group, Harley, Aiden, Adam and Myself, took a camera, found a empty ICT room within the college and filmed ourselves lip syncing to see how it looked and where improvements were needed if needed. We choose a ICT room because we knew each room has a computer with speakers, instead of playing the music from a iPod/Phone which isnt very loud.
At the end of the lip syncing practice, we all felt very positive about what we had produced and seen.

Risk Assessment
Before starting production we had to take into consideration of the risks whilst filming, whether it be traffic or as little as falling over a stone. Each risk was taken into consideration and discussed how we could prevent each one, for example; traffic could be prevented with people watching out for oncoming traffic, as for falling over a stone, wear correct footwear and watch out for unlevel surfaces.

Example of Risk Assessment

Activity

Hazards

Measures to control

Dancing in Car park

Traffic

Falling over a stone

Have people watching out for traffic at the gates.

Wear suitable shoes.

Jumping with guitars

Could hit surrounding people with the guitar, could possibly hurt yourself.

Practice, make sure you have enough space to jump.

Pushing students

Students falling over objects or each other.

Practice and plan a cue to when to prepare to move.

Production
We as a class spent 4 lessons filming the 1 minute 14 seconds of footage. We had to re-film some scenes due to a member of busted having his hair cut which would affect the continuity and would look odd if in one scene he had hair and the other had none, this took 1 lesson.
As the class has around 25 students, their was a lot of opinions being thrown out their, i think we have all learnt that when it comes to our final piece, working in groups bigger than around four would be hassle, i know for me working in a two could even be hassle as people are not always reliable.
In production, i played as a member of busted (james) and i learnt that it was hard to lip sync, dance and pretend to play the guitar, so for future knowledge i dont think i will lip sync much in my final peice.
I noticed in production a lot of scenes shot could have been done better but half of the class just wanted to get the production done and out of the way, this has shown be that when it comes to the final piece to use time wisely and plan and shoot the scenes to that plan, every shot counts.

Post-Production
Post-production is still happening to the busted remake. So far the group and I have found it difficult to match up the lip syning scenes to the actual music, so a lot of cutting has had to happen, this has shown everyone how bad some of the shots were and that some should have been re-shot, which everyone would agree on.
So far only 2 lessons have been put into the post-prodution of the video, and with it beign a big group, everybody has their ideas. We are using Apple Mac's and they are not the best, they are very basic, which will affect the final peice, it has made me thought i may use 'Sony Vegas Pro 9' to edit my final piece when it comes to it.

Overall i have learnt that making a music video is extremly hard and its going to be tough, however i think it will be very fun and i will learn a lot more this year than last year. I look forward to making my final piece.

Simplicity

This Music video by Ok Go, is a good example of how simplicity can also be effective. In this video all that is used are treadmills and themselves. Many years ago, a music video with only treadmills would sound silly, but this worked off to become one of YouTubes big hit's at that point.

Good example?

Introduction to my A2 Blog

This blog has been created to record my year in media. I will be looking at a variety of text's and evaluating them. By the end of the year i will be able to use this blog to revise for my exam's and hopefully get the best grade from what i can offer.

Last year i got a C in Media at AS level. i was very pleased from it, i believe i learnt a significant amount from that year which i can bring into this year and also carry on into my life out of school. Such as camera angles, annotation, debates and evaluating texts. I have also learnt from last year to do even more planning and research and stick to deadlines, and that a storyboard really does help out the production, so this year i will learn from my mistakes of last year and step up in media. This year i aim for a B in media A2.
